:: ENGLISH :: The works Follow the Circle… (2003), …Around the Circle… (2004) and …Until the Circle Closes (2005-06) together form a kind of Circle Trilogy. Despite the interrelation suggested by this grouping, each part is completely independent work and can therefore be performed separately. However, they have many features in common, and are based on a circular thought process, as implied by the titles. In the short, prelude-like quartet Follow the Circle… this cyclical idea is applied in various ways to generate musical material such as harmony, textures, tempo, etc. This material is then passed on to the trio …Around the Circle... and further on to the final part …Until the Circle Closes, composed for chamber orchestra. Nevertheless, circulation of material and certain common traits do not inevitably lead to resemblance. All three parts of the trilogy indeed share some similarities, but are very different from one other. Near the end of each part’s journey, as the circle nears completion, a similar musical situation to the beginning of the piece is heard. However this new beginning, or in other words the moment when the circle closes, is not identical to the actual start of the work: something has changed. This can be understood as analogous to temporal cycles; the start of each day, week, month or year is always a new beginning. :: © Tomi Räisänen, 2006
:: DEUTSCH :: Dieses Werk formt mit zwei einrahmenden Werken ähnlichen Titels einen Zyklus, dessen Teile auch getrennt gespielt werden können. Nach einer Fassung für Blockflöten schrieb der Komponist die Fassung für Altflöte/Flöte/Piccolo zusammen mit Viola und Klavier. Hier werden auch geräuschhafte Spieltechniken der Instrumente genutzt (Mehrklänge auf der Flöte, ”Kratzen” auf der Viola, Zupfen und Schlagen im Flügelinnenraum).
Gegen Ende des Stückes kehrt eine ähnliche musikalische Situation wie zu Beginn zurück, der Kreis schließt sich, allerdings mit Veränderungen, offen für neue Entwicklungen, vergleichbar eher dem ”Kreisschluss” einer Sprirale. :: © Matthias Lassen, 2009
:: SUOMI :: Teokset Follow the Circle… (2003), …Around the Circle… (2004) sekä …Until the Circle Closes (2005-06) muodostavat yhdessä eräänlaisen ”ympyrätrilogian”. Huolimatta teossarjan ilmiselvästä trilogiamaisuudesta kukin osanen on kuitenkin täysin oma itsenäinen kokonaisuutensa ja voidaan näin ollen esittää erillään muista. Kaikissa kolmessa teoksessa on kuitenkin paljon yhteisiä piirteitä. Sävellysten lähtökohtana on ollut ympyrämäisyyden idea, kuten teosotsikotkin antavat ymmärtää. Lyhyessä ja preludimaisessa osassa Follow the Circle… ympyrän ideaa sovelletaan monin tavoin tuottamaan musiikillista materiaalia kuten harmoniaa, tekstuureja, tempovaihteluita jne. Tämä materiaali on myöhemmin kierrätetty trioon …Around the Circle… ja edelleen viimeiseen osaan …Until the Circle Closes, joka on sävelletty kamariorkesterille. Materiaalin kierrättäminen ja yhteiset piirteet eivät välttämättä tarkoita väistämätöntä samankaltaisuutta. On totta, että trilogian kullakin osalla on epäilemättä joitain samankaltaisia piirteitä, mutta toisaalta ne ovat luonteeltaan hyvinkin erilaisia teoksia. Kunkin ympyräsävellyksen loppua lähestyttäessä matka ympyrän ympäri on kuljettu loppuun, jolloin kuullaan teoksen alkua muistuttava musiikillinen tilanne. Kuitenkaan uusi alku, tai paremmin sanottuna hetki, jolloin ympyrä sulkeutuu, ei ole identtinen teoksen alun kanssa. Jokin on muuttunut. Tätä tilannetta voidaan verrata ajan kiertoon.
